COCSD B S Run #6
East SD Foothills Corvette Rally/Run to Barrett Junction Café
Sponsored by George Dauphine and Steve Hucik
Everyone who drives a Corvette looks forward to that day when they can take it out on the open road and put it through its paces. The morning was clear and sunny on Saturday, February 8, 2020, as about 50 fun loving COCSD and Corvette friends met at El Cajon Wal-Mart Supercenter parking lot before embarking on a challenging rally through the back country and foothills of east San Diego County.
George Dauphine, the Co-rally lead “starter” sent over 25 Corvettes on their way following a series of clues and directions that led them through the beautiful East San Diego foothills to the Barrett Junction Café in Dulzura where Barrett Junction Café’s famous fish fry awaited them. Upon arrival, the drivers and their navigators checked in with co-rally master Steve Hucik for their official times. They were to submit their answers to the rally questions, mileage driven and elapsed time to find their way to the café later during the Awards ceremony. It was also time to separate several drivers and navigators from obviously some “challenging” times arguing over clues and correct directions.
Using the “Honor System” (practiced by Bernie Madoff unsuccessfully), the rally teams self-graded their rally answers. Somewhat of a surprise that no one had a 100% SCORE. There were a few grumbles and challenges, especially about the color of the “resting C3” again this year. But his year George and Steve had actually stopped and checked the VIN tag and got the correct GM color code (Classic White-Code 10). But there was still some controversy over the stated color, but only the GM color name was accepted. We like a little controversy to add some fun to the rally. Several teams had similar results or “errors” so the determining factors for first, second and third place trophies came down to mileage accuracy and the elapsed time to complete the rally.
First place winners received their trophies with a gold Corvette on top. Second place came with a trophy bearing a Model A (depicting a slower time??). Third place “winners” were given a trophy with a John Deere tractor on top (an even slower reminder, but all in fun!!).
And to continue the fun for this rally event a special award to the slowest driver/navigator team was given anonymously for being “dead ass last” with a remarkable time of almost double the winning time. Fittingly, their trophy represented the last half of a donkey. Use your imagination here if you weren’t at the event.
Barrett Junction Café did an excellent job of serving the large crowd and there were lots of compliments to the chef for the great quality fish luncheon and the excellent service by Connie’s crew at the Café.
In closing, your rally masters Steve and George want to thank all the participants for a fun day. A huge thanks-filled shout out to Leon (Owner), Connie and all their staff for sharing his famous fish fry dinner and historic Barrett Junction Café with all the Rally participants. Also, many thanks to Glen Honig for taking a lot of great photos. See them uploaded on the COCSD website.
We hope you will join us again next year when we head out to Barrett Junction Cafe for G&S Rally #7.
