The San Diego Region of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) is hosting a track day weekend at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway on January 7 and 8.
There will be just three run groups, with a maximum of 20 drivers per group. As usual, the groups will be based upon experience: novice (including first-timers), intermediate and advanced. Each group will get four 20-minute sessions per day.
Chuckwalla is a fun, safe course, with several types of turns (including a “bowl”), and some relatively fast straights. Of the 12 tracks I’ve run at speed, I put it at number six on the “fun factor” scale. The SCCA will be running the 2.7-mile course in the counter-clockwise direction on Saturday, and clockwise on Sunday.
The SCCA allows registered drivers to ride along as passengers. So if you’re a novice, or just haven’t been to Chuckwalla, you can ride along with an experienced driver, or have them ride along as an instructor.
The cost for the two track days is $365, including the weekend SCCA membership. If you’re already a member, it’s just $350. Or you can run one day for $215. DON’T WAIT TO REGISTER! For more info and to register, go to the motorsportreg.com page: Chuckwalla Valley registration.
You will need a Snell-rated SA2015 or SA2020 helmet. Convertibles require a full face helmet with rollover protection. Coupe drivers can use an open-face helmet.
Desert Center is pretty much in the middle of nowhere, about halfway between Indio and Blythe. They have a few 1-bedroom “cabins” you can rent for $200 per night, but they get reserved quickly. You can make your cabin reservation here: Chuckwalla cabins
The nearest gas station is 22 miles away. They do have fuel on site, but it is expensive. Planning is essential. There is a small restaurant on site. Bring a heavy coat! It will be cold in the morning!
