Turkey Trout Run

TURKEY TROUT RUN

It was another typical San Diego November day and twenty-four Corvettes showed for a pre -Thanksgiving run. Traveling thru 130 miles of varied terrain we were given a ride via the fantastic roads of Southern California. This run had us going by three lakes, the desert, and into the Laguna Mountains with all the fall colors on display.

The day began with a major traffic problem caused by a roll over accident blocking our designed route. No problem as route” B” was quickly identified and off we went. We headed up the 15 to Pomerado Road and twisty Hidden Valley Road, Bandy Canyon Road and then San Pasqual Parkway past the Wild Animal Park. Our first landmark was Lake Wolford followed by a restroom break at Harrah’s Casino. From there we took the 76 past Mt. Palomar and Lake Henshaw to the 79 and S 22 to the Borrego Desert. The straightness and high visibility of this road allows us to safely pass several motor homes and other vehicles towing desert toys on our adventure. Banner Grade was void of slow vehicles allowing a fun ride up to the top. Finally, it was past Lake Cuyamaca to Hwy 8 finishing in El Cajon.

We plan a final cruise of Neighborhood Lights to end the year. As for runs, this was it. It ends a year that began with the Maiden Voyage Run in January, followed by the BS Run to Barrett Junction and the Casino Concert Run to see Grand Funk Railroad in February. Then came the pandemic and everything changed.

Except it did not for a few of us who continued to meet each week and find a road trip of our own. We stayed within the restrictions of the State guidelines, social distances and no more than ten people. We drove many new roads the club had not taken in the recent past and plan to offer these trips on future club runs.

After restrictions were relaxed and members felt safe in limited outings, club run were again on the calendar. In July we had the Twisty Run the Park that included a picnic in San Dieguito Park. That was followed by the Virgin Territory Run, The Sunrise Over the Desert Run, The Topless Run and BBQ, and the Palm Desert Run.

In summary, we had more club driving events this year than in recent years and we were shutdown for four months.
