THE WILD WILD WEST RUN
January 30, 2021
To have the run or not have the run, too much traffic, chains required, road closures, all factors in deciding wither to go? We did go and that proved to be a good decision. We did go to the mountains and that also turned out to be a good decision. We did not go through Pine Valley as the Sunrise Highway was jammed with people going to see the snow. That was another good decision!
We had eleven cars show up, including Doug Ray with donuts for all. We took off down Tavern Road that eventually turned into Old HWY 80 and followed that all the way to its end where we merged into I-8. We took the freeway to Ocotillo where we stopped for a restroom break.
From there it was straight back via the Overland Stage Route of 1849, now route S2. This is one of the best wide-open roads going thru no man’s land with little traffic. That is until you run into someone who is oblivious to anything behind them, like a bunch of sports cars and refuses to use the plentiful turnouts!
We did go up Banner Grade following such a vehicle at 20 mph. Not fun, however it did make for a safer drive as we did run into some snow and ice in shady spots on the road. We also took Wynola Road which bypassed downtown Julian and all the snow looky-loos.
We did make an unplanned stop at Dudley’s due to the need of a restroom stop. There we decided to end the run at one of Doug’s favorite lunchrooms back in San Diego.
All considered, this was a fun run with great roads and weather. It also was a good way to introduce Rob Luciano, who has recently moved here from NYC and is interested in joining the club, to the scenic backroads of our county.
